Fighting For Better Mental Health: Inside The Mind Of James Wallace

WOW HYDRATE has been a proud sponsor of Team JW Training for the last two years.

Based in Beckenham, South-East London, the organisation works with adults and youths in the local area providing boxing coaching and training with a strong focus on tackling mental health issues such as intrusive thoughts, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and addiction.

The man behind it, 44-year-old James Wallace, has now launched Beckenham’s first Amateur Boxing Club. James’s passion and hard work has seen his training business grow substantially with clients ranging from the latest in boxing talent, to professional sports people and social media influencers. His clients love him for the results they see, but it’s James’s select group of youngsters- many from troubled backgrounds, that drive him in his role as a personal trainer and qualified professional boxing coach. He’s excited to see Beckenham ABC go from strength to strength with his continued passion for better mental health embedded into the club.

Mental Health - James Wallace - WOW Hydrate

From crime & addiction to fatherhood & boxing

Following his own difficult childhood, James struggled through adolescence and found himself resorting to drugs and violence driven by fear and feelings of vulnerability. Fighting became a defence mechanism for James, who had grown up in an unstable environment in Lewisham and Bromley- areas that had an active gang culture at the time. It’s no surprise that James failed to settle into education and after several expulsions, he left school and found himself being recruited into a life of crime. He expresses deep regrets about his life choices at the time, which led him into a spiral of drug addiction, run-ins with the law, absconding overseas, depression and even time in prison.

Years later though, his story has transformed from one of hopelessness and shame to one of pride. Thanks to the birth of his son, discovering boxing and a deep wish to protect his son’s future, he was driven to overcome his addictions, but he says it was a constant battle to stay clean in between periods of relapse.

‘I had a son and thought I needed to sort myself out. I started getting into boxing too. I wasn’t emotionally there for my son, as I was in active addiction, but with so much love for my child, I did my best at the time and believed I was doing well. If I had a fight, I was motivated to get clean for eight weeks, but I would go downhill after.’

When his brother provided James with an opportunity to attend an inpatient rehabilitation programme, he took it. It was a painful experience, but after 29 days in rehab, James came out with the resolve to do everything he could to stay clean for the sake of his son. ‘Without my son, I wouldn’t have gotten through it, I wouldn’t be here today.’

The road to recovery

James worked hard on recovery. He found a sponsor, enrolled in college and gained qualifications in counselling, mentoring and welfare. He wanted to specialise in working with troubled children alongside those suffering with addiction. He also achieved his amateur boxing license and his pro boxing license with the British Boxing Board of Control. This was a hugely significant moment for James. He started making a name for himself as a personal trainer, and at a crucial point, he was offered a lifeline when the rehabilitation facility offered him some work in the field. James’s drive, emerging reputation and success as a trainer grew from there, and five years ago he opened Team JW Training in Beckenham. He recalls the feeling of disbelief when his bank allowed him to open a business account- he had expected to be turned away due to his record. Reflecting on it all, he says, ‘I believe God opened doors for me that I felt would never be possible.’

Mental Health - Beckenham ABC - WOW Hydrate

Mental Health - Team JW Training - WOW Hydrate

Through his business, he has been able to offer a safe place to vulnerable young people where they can talk, train and overcome their own issues. With his counselling background and personal experience of mental health issues, James recognises that psychological problems can present in many forms.

‘Addiction comes under a massive banner– it can be addiction to drugs, sex, gambling- even training. In the kids I work with, some suffer from a lack of confidence, ADHD, anger, trauma, maybe they’ve been labelled as ‘naughty’. But therapy is a two-way thing sometimes. I listen to my clients; they listen to me.’

‘I’m good at connecting with kids, most good fighters have issues and insecurities or mental health problems that they’re dealing with,’ explains James. ‘Going to the gym is one way they survive, but they do need other help. I’m open about my recovery and it helps. I admit my honest truth- that I’ve suffered, that I’ve cried. I have insecurities.’ He points out, ‘The toughest people are the ones suffering the most, there’s a saying, pride will kill you. They might be a great fighter but they’re losing the battle inside.’

Breaking the Stigma of Mental Health

Three months ago, with his partner Danny Beaver and Chris Okoh, ex-Cruiserweight Commonwealth Champion and boxing coach, James was able to open Beckenham Amateur Boxing Club. The trio have invested their time and money into the club and have received support and sponsorship from the sports drink brand, WOW HYDRATE. James states that when he opened the club, his main aim was to help get more children off the streets and into the gym.

As a recovered addict and father, he says, ‘I struggle now with not helping others as I know how painful life can be. I have families and so many kids for training from age five upwards.’ He explains that despite a long waiting list of potential clients, he tries to be selective about who he takes on, making sure that he’s able to work with small groups to give individuals the time and support they need to reach their potential.

James Wallace - Better Mental Health - WOW Hydrate

James strongly believes that being relatable is what has helped him to connect with his clients. ‘Before you can give advice, you need trust and respect. I’ve been through it. No kid wants to open up to someone who has learned from a textbook, I can talk to them meaningfully because I’ve been through it. By understanding people, we can make a change.’

Despite his successes over the last few years, James is honest about the fact he still has his personal battles with his own demons. ‘I work seven days a week and I do still suffer good times and bad. I’ve had a few slips that have been very painful, but I will always get back up.’

Follow Team JW Training to see more from James and his team in the gym and at Beckenham ABC, which has just completed its first half a season undefeated.

WOW HYDRATE teams up with Bloomsbury Football

WOW HYDRATE teams up with Bloomsbury Football to ensure that more children can play sports

March 11, 2022

Protein and electrolyte water brand, WOW HYDRATE, today announced its partnership with Bloomsbury Football, who are using the power of football to improve the lives of young people in London.

The donation from the sports drink brand will be used to fund eighteen bursary places for girls across Bloomsbury’s football and futsal programmes for a year. After discovering through a recent study carried out by Women in Sport that 1.3 million girls across the UK lose interest in sporting participation during their teenage years, the foundation are doing everything they can to reclaim women’s football – with WOW HYDRATE in full support.

At Bloomsbury’s Foundation and Academy levels, they have both boys’ and girls’ teams. They speak about them equally, and they gain the same high-quality football training every single session – with no exceptions made.

WOW HYDRATE currently works with many grassroots football clubs across the UK, providing them with a regular supply of the drinks to support player performance. The brand also boasts a number of world-class ambassadors, including premiership footballers Harry Maguire and Kevin De Bruyne, as well as Manchester United Women’s record goalscorer, Ella Toone.

Toone will be helping to inspire the girls’ teams at Bloomsbury – as well as the next generation of female football players – through WOW HYDRATE’s long-term grassroots campaign, which encourages young players to choose healthy hydration while playing sports.

Charlie Hyman, Founder and CEO of Bloomsbury Football, set the foundation up to bring kids from different backgrounds together to play football. Commenting on the partnership, he said:

“At Bloomsbury, we work to remove the barriers to accessing high-quality football training at the grassroots level. We work with over 5,000 children in London per week, improving community cohesion and boosting physical activity levels. We’re so happy to be working with WOW HYDRATE to support more girls to get on the pitch.

Regular sporting participation has so many positive impacts on girls’ mental and physical health, fighting the harmful stereotypes that discourage girls from being active. We’re excited for this partnership in the run-up to the Euros this summer, and beyond.”

Jon Hayman, Managing Director of WOW HYDRATE, added:

“We’re thrilled to be able to provide more children with the opportunity to participate in sports. Not only will this partnership ensure that more girls can play football, but it will also guarantee that they have the best hydration products pre, during and post exercise for optimum performance.”

Hydration Hacks – how to keep hydrated the easy way

Hydration Hacks

We all look forward to hot summer days, especially the freedom they bring to run and exercise outside in the sunshine. However, staying hydrated is important while enjoying and exercising in this lovely warm weather. Below we explore why staying hydrated is so important during the summer months and how WOW HYDRATE can help you.

On average we should drink six to eight large glasses of water every day to remain hydrated, but do we actually do that? It can be hard to keep track of our health when juggling work, home and exercise and staying hydrated can often be forgotten. Dehydration can have really significant health implications and when you’re looking after your body, remember it needs plenty of electrolyte infused water to function at its best!

We are what we drink

Water is vital for our survival; we are made up of 70% water. This is why it is so important for us to drink electrolyte infused water and to keep our bodies hydrated, especially in the summer when we lose water due to sweating.

Hydration for health

Hydration is vital for good health. It helps prevent us from developing headaches, becoming constipated and lethargic and it keeps our skin healthy.

It is also fairly easy to keep hydrated. Start and end the day with a glass of electrolyte infused water and cut down your consumption of caffeine and sugar, as they can both cause dehydration.

Signs of dehydration

Signs of dehydration you need to be aware of include dizziness, headaches, dark coloured urine and irritability. You can avoid dehydration by making sure that you drink at least two litres of water a day and more water on hot, sunny days.

Health & Fitness - Hydration Hacks - Electrolyte Infused Water - WOW HYDRATE

Health & Fitness - Hydration Hacks - Electrolyte Infused Water - WOW HYDRATE

Below are a few simple hydration hacks.

Drink on your breaks

You may drink endless cups of tea and coffee at work, but that’s not enough to keep you properly hydrated. In fact, caffeine, found in tea as well as coffee, is a diuretic and makes the body urinate more. When on a bathroom break, make sure you grab a glass of electrolyte infused water on the way back to your desk. If you build hydration into your routine, it’s far easier to remember to stay hydrated throughout your day.

Choose specialist hydration drinks

If you’re in a rush or do not have time to make a post-workout shake, choose a specialist hydration drink like WOW HYDRATE sugar-free electrolyte infused water and vitamin water. Their patented push cap technology stores electrolytes, vitamins and a natural flavour, which is released when you’re ready to drink. Low in calories, WOW HYDRATE is the perfect way to keep your body hydrated on the go.

Have a glass of water with another drink

If you’re drinking coffee, fruit juice or anything other than water, follow it with a glass of water to flush your system and boost those hydration levels.

Get creative in the kitchen

If you’re bored with tap water, there are plenty of ways you can make things more interesting. Try freezing fruits like blueberries and pineapple chunks to add to your electrolyte infused water or infuser bottle for some fresh and healthy flavours.

Staying hydrated on the go

It’s important to remember to keep on top of your hydration levels throughout the day, even if you don’t have access to a kitchen. Pack a specialist hydration drink like WOW HYDRATE in your bag so it’s always there when you need a boost.

How WOW HYDRATE drinks keep you hydrated

WOW HYDRATE drinks have been specifically formulated to keep you hydrated as you work out under the sun. They include added electrolytes to keep your body in balance when you work out and when you sweat. They also feature added vitamins to boost energy and to refuel your body. Just as importantly, WOW HYDRATE tastes good and is available in a refreshing Lemon & Lime and Orange flavours.

How can electrolyte water improve your performance?

How can electrolyte water improve your performance

We all know it’s essential to consume fluid before, during and after sporting activities, but is there any benefit from drinking electrolyte water instead of standard H2O? And, is there a noticeable increase in performance when replacing H2O with electrolyte water?

First, we need to know what an electrolyte is and what it does…

What are electrolytes?

Electrolytes are essential salts and minerals that can conduct electrical impulses within the body. When minerals dissolve in fluids, they form electrolytes. Minerals that contain electrolytes in your body are sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. For normal function your body needs to receive adequate amounts of electrolytes from the food or water you consume.

They are important as they help to maintain pH levels in your body. Not only do electrolytes help your organs, muscles and nerves to function properly, but they also assist with moving essential ions in and out of cells, transferring goodness around the body to where it is needed.

What are electrolyte waters?

Electrolyte water is a drink that has heightened levels of electrolytes. Each electrolyte water is infused with electrically-charged minerals.

Electrolyte drinks are specifically designed to improve hydration and other bodily functions by having optimal concentrations of only the most beneficial electrolytes. Some electrolyte drinks are specifically created for post-exercise recovery.

How do electrolytes affect your sports performance?

Electrolytes carry electrical charges between cells. This means that all the minerals you consume helps the transmission of immune signals, nerve impulses and many other communications within your body.

Electrolyte Water - Sports Performance - Electrolyte Drink - WOW HYDRATE

Electrolyte Drink - Sports Performance - Electrolyte Water - WOW HYDRATE

During physical activity you’ll need additional fluids to replace the water lost through sweat. You can lose 2.5% of body weight through perspiration, and this can lead to experiencing physical impairments and a lack of cognitive functions. These include mood state, performance and reaction time.

Electrolytes are crucial for the nervous system and muscle function. Electrolyte water is fantastic for a greater hydration intake.

Nervous system function

Maintaining good fluid levels is extremely important for brain health. Your brain, after all, is an incredibly important part of your body; it sends out electrical signals through your nerve cells to communicate information to all the other cells.

The signals sent by the brain are called nerve impulses; they are created by changes to the electrical charge of the nerve cell membrane (movement of electrolyte sodium travelling across the nerve cell membrane). This then creates a chain reaction which moves more sodium ions along the nerve cell axon.

As well as electrical charges, electrolytes help regulate fluid balance throughout your body, including the amount of water inside and outside of your cells. If your electrolytes are too low or too high, it could have a neurological effect such as confusion, muscle weakness, muscle spasms and cramps.

Muscle function

Muscle function relies on the electrolyte calcium. Calcium is needed for your muscles to contract. The muscle fibres glide together and move alongside each other as the muscles shorten and contract.

The other electrolyte your muscles need is magnesium, as it facilitates muscle fibres to slide outwards and relax after contracting.

Proper hydration

Electrolytes are essential for a fully functioning hydrated body. Electrolytes contain vital minerals that are responsible for directing water to areas of your body that require it most.

The electrolyte sodium particularly helps to maintain fluid balance through osmosis. The process of osmosis helps to prevent the cells in your body from shrivelling, due to dehydration. During osmosis, water moves through the wall of a cell membrane from a dilute solution (which contains more water than electrolytes) to a greater concentrated solution (which contains more electrolytes than water).

Benefits of Electrolyte Water - Electrolyte Drink - WOW HYDRATE

As already mentioned, it is important to replace water and electrolytes lost through sweat in order to keep a healthy electrolyte balance. To do this we recommend you drink electrolyte water while exercising to ensure a healthy balance. This will also help to improve the brain, heart, muscles and nervous system.

How electrolyte water improves performance

Electrolyte water plays an important role in rehydrating the body. Drinking water during exercise/activities prevents excessive dehydration and changes in your electrolyte balance. The added benefits of electrolyte-enhanced water are that it helps to improve athletic performance while helping to prevent health conditions like an irregular heart beat, fatigue, nausea and, in extreme cases, seizures.

Electrolyte drinks are especially designed to help improve your mental focus and increase your energy levels. This is achieved by essential electrolytes (sodium, chloride, calcium, potassium, magnesium) helping to move important ions in and out of cells, transferring goodness around your body. Amino acids (Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine) are also a benefit from consuming electrolyte waters, greatly helping to reduce fatigue and improving muscle functions.

Benefits of Electrolyte Sports Drink - Electrolyte Water - WOW HYDRATE

Electrolyte Drink - Sports Performance - Electrolyte Water - WOW HYDRATE

WOW HYDRATE electrolyte drinks also contain a range of vitamins (B6, C, D). These are great for helping to keep your immune system healthy as well as boosting your metabolism, generating more energy and improving your performance.

We believe the most effective way to replace electrolytes lost through sweat,is by drinking electrolyte water while exercising. Not only will this keep you hydrated during activities, but it will help keep your nervous system, brain, muscles and heart healthy, which is especially important for an active person.

What are the benefits of electrolyte water?

An electrolyte imbalance often happens when you are dehydrated. This is why it is so important to remain hydrated throughout the day, especially when you are sick or when you are exercising. Although water is great for rehydrating, electrolyte water is a much better alternative with many more benefits.

When we become dehydrated our body cannot perform all of its vital functions, leaving you feeling tired, experiencing muscle weakness and cramps, headaches and much more. This can be harmful to your health and leave you with further complications such as convulsions.

This is where electrolyte water really excels. Not only does it regulate your hydration levels, but also moves nutrients into your cells and waste out. It also plays a huge part in regulating your brain function, nerves, heart and muscles.

The importance of a good electrolyte balance isn’t just for people taking part in sports or other activities, it is important for anyone and everyone on the go. Without electrolytes running through your body and brain, your performance is severely affected.

How are electrolyte waters different from sports drinks?

Electrolyte waters, like sports drinks, have added electrolytes for greater hydration, but sports drinks often contain large amounts of sugar and calories.

Sports drinks will provide you with energy through a carbohydrate source. They also include a few electrolytes to help ease fatigue so you can exercise for a longer amount of time. Sports drinks often have a high sugar content which may help at first, but will shortly be followed with a hard crash. This is due to your blood-sugar levels dropping which will leave you feeling fatigued – possibly with a headache.

Benefits of Electrolyte Sports Drink - Electrolyte Water - WOW HYDRATE

Electrolyte drinks contain a wide range of electrolytes, vitamins and amino acids (mentioned above). They improve your mental and physical performance by keeping your electrolytes and hydration levels balanced, reducing the risk of fatigue, cramping, headaches and much more.

Why WOW HYDRATE?

WOW HYDRATE electrolyte waters boast state-of-the-art push-cap technology. Our bottle cap contains vital vitamins waiting to be released into the electrolyte water. The cap is designed to maintain all the goodness of our vitamins, keeping the ingredients at their best until they are released into the water.

Fitness Trends Of 2021

Fitness Trends Of 2021

2020 was a year to remember for many reasons. With no commuting, travelling, or working from the office, our lifestyles suddenly became sedentary. Across the country, we had to approach fitness very differently. Studios closed down temporarily, home workout equipment sold out quickly, and personal trainers had to swap the gym floor for Zoom sessions in order to put their clients through their paces.

Over the course of the last year, spare bedrooms have been converted into home gyms, and individuals have found a new love for the outdoors. Whether you’ve been planning and completing your own workouts from home or following a fitness programme provided by a personal trainer in your local park, there’s no doubt you’ve had to get used to a ‘new normal’ way of exercising.

With the easing of lockdown and the gyms opening back up, just what trends can you expect to see for the rest of the year?

Virtual fitness

Virtual fitness classes surged in popularity in 2020, and it doesn’t look like they’re going anywhere anytime soon. Whether you’re on the hunt for kettlebell workouts for beginners or want to take part in an advanced HIIT class, you’ll be sure to find a session perfect for you online.

If you don’t want to head back to the gym just yet, but you’re yet to find virtual fitness classes that you love, online subscription packages such as WOW CLUB will provide you with everything you need to achieve your goals. Not only will you receive meal plans from expert nutritionists after signing up, but you will also gain access to over 600 workouts with specialist trainers, as well as a free gym kit worth over £200, ensuring you can look the part while getting stuck into some of the best home workout programmes for you.

Simple training

Another projected fitness trend for 2021 is bodyweight workouts. Because gyms – and therefore all equipment – have been out of action, many people have enjoyed simplifying their workouts. From push ups and pull ups through to squats and crunches, individuals have realised they don’t need all the machinery found inside gyms in order to see results. They’ve simply been grabbing their pre-workout drink, finding a spot for their mat, and accomplishing a sweaty and effective workout in a space that suits them.

Remote coaching

Have you been considering hiring a personal trainer? If so, why not find someone to train you from the comfort of your own home or garden? Due to the lockdowns throughout the course of the last year, many trainers were forced to coach their clients online – and it’s likely this will continue to be the case post-pandemic. With remote coaching, it’ll be like having a personal trainer in your back pocket: they will provide you with great support, hold you accountable, create personalised fitness programmes and help to keep you motivated when you feel like you’re struggling.

Outdoor fitness

It’s not only at-home workouts that have seen a growth in popularity – walking and hiking have become a favoured way to exercise, too. Without any weekend plans, a lot of us found a new love for the great outdoors. Whether it was a socially distanced stroll in the park with a friend, or a hike through the countryside with a loved one, this form of low-impact fitness has been a great way to get fresh air, as well as get our steps in. As summer approaches, there’s no doubt that we’ll all be wanting to spend even more time outside.

Before, during, and after any form of exercise, it’s essential that you remain hydrated. Whether you’re planning on completing sprints in the park, or are getting ready for a heavy weights session, keeping WOW HYDRATE Electrolyte infused water with you will help to kick-start your recovery and prevent dehydration. Similarly, a protein supplement will also be extremely beneficial. Consuming WOW HYDRATE Protein after your workout will ensure that you’re receiving 20grams of collagen protein, essential BCAAs and vitamins, aiding recovery and allowing you to be ready to train again quicker.

How to Tackle Gym Anxiety – Harry Jameson’s Top Tips

Whether you’re someone who wants to gain more confidence in the gym or someone who feels a bit nervous about getting back in and not being able to do what you could before. Performance Coach and Celebrity Trainer, Harry Jameson, is here to help with his four top tips:

1. Come with a plan. This serves many purposes but mostly it makes you efficient with your time, makes sure what you’re doing is well structured and avoids any standing around wondering what to do next, or even worse, running out of ideas and leaving early. You can sign up to the WOW Club if you want workout structures and ideas for the gym.

2. Set new goals. Do not expect to pick up the same weights or jump straight back on at the same speed on the treadmill if you have had a long lay off. Starting at a lower level (I would start around 25% less on everything) and then building back up over time means you can get that feeling back of “hitting your goals” which is incredibly motivating in itself.

3. Get a good gym buddy. If you’re feeling a little nervous, chances are so is someone you know. Support, encourage and motivate each other!

4. Just GO FOT IT! It sounds so simple but just get your headphones on and get in there and smash out your workout to the best of your ability. After the first session you’ll feel so good you did it that you’ll wonder what you were even worried about in the first place. Momentum builds momentum and it’s a great feeling once you get that momentum back.

To help you #PushIt through your first workouts back make sure to have your electrolyte and protein water to hand!

Ultimately going to work and having that time for myself has made me a better mum, as when we are together in the evenings and weekends I try to make the most of it.

Also having flexible employers has helped so much. I am able to start after nursery drop off and leave for pick ups and without this it would be very difficult, so thankfully WOW HYDRATE has really helped in this aspect.” – Shannon

Which women are you inspired by?

“I’d have to say my mum. Nothing stops her and she never lets any hurdles get in her way. She’s a great role model and she pushes me to work hard and achieve success. If I am happy, she’s happy!” – Maisy

“It would definitely have to be The Queen. Nobody is more inspirational or powerful – she runs a country, has seen a lot of things in her lifetime and is still completely sane! At her age, she’s incredible and that’s why many look up to her. I’d love thirty minutes over a cup of tea with her to hear some of her life stories.” – Fran

Which mentors or role models have positively impacted you in your career, and what’s one lesson that they have taught you?

“Someone I really look up to is Karren Brady. She has successfully navigated a field that it notoriously male dominated and gained credibility. She has always stated that it’s important to accept that not everyone is going to like you, but it’s important to like yourself and be good at what you do, and I love that.

Dean & Neil, WOW HYDRATE’s founders, have also positively impacted my career. They have taught me that no matter who I am dealing with at work, everyone is human, which has helped to build my confidence when dealing with important stakeholders. They’re so great at uplifting the team, and always tell us that our charm is just by being ourselves.” – Queenie

WOW HYDRATE is continuously announcing exciting new partnerships and ambassadors. How do you juggle working for such a fast-paced company with your personal life? Please share your work/life balance tips!

Here at WOW HYDRATE, not only do we all truly believe in the brand, but we’re always trying to educate just how much our product can truly improve people’s lives.  Working ‘outside of office hours’ only helps to grow the product! I do know when I need to switch off however, and having a rest is essential in order to produce quality work.

My tips for a good work/life balance are:

  • Make sure to do something you enjoy out of work hours, something that feels like a treat to reward your hard work
  • If you feel overwhelmed with work, do something relaxing or active, then come back to it. Everything and everyone can wait.
  • Always voice when you need help, and have a work friend know when to tell you that you need a break – holding you accountable for not looking after yourself first
  • Overworking is as bad as not working at all – it’s all about quality, not quantity
  • See parts of your job as a hobby, otherwise you will not enjoy doing some things out of hours
  • Don’t run on autopilot, understand who you are helping and the purpose of the task, and give meaning to everything you do
  • Make sure to step outside every day for some fresh air
  • Get your essential vitamins in daily with WOW HYDRATE, and get 8 hours of sleep in!” – Maya
